Getting a year out of your bank
How do I download a year of statements from my bank?
One month of statements shows you one month. A year shows the car insurance that comes round once a year, the heating bills in winter and what December costs. Token Circles reads the transaction files banks export, so a year of history comes down to a file or two per account.
Why a year
Your first circle in Token Circles, Clear picture, wants a year on file: 12 tracked months out of the last 13. A month counts as tracked once it holds 3 entries of any kind. The 13 months run up to and include this one, so a year imported up to the end of last month already counts.
The averages behind the circles, from what you spend in a month to how many days your cushion lasts, use up to the last 12 tracked months before this one, and wait until there are 3. This month stays out while it’s under way, because half a month would pull every average down. Why one month lies has the longer answer.
Before you download
- Ask for a file, not a PDF. Token Circles imports the CSV and Excel files banks export. A PDF statement is for reading.
- Cover the whole year. Ask for everything from the first day of this month, a year ago: on 14 May, that’s 1 May last year to today.
- One file per account. A bank’s file goes into one account in Token Circles, so download each account on its own.
- If a bank limits how long one statement can be, download two and make their dates meet without overlapping.
Bank by bank
These are the banks and apps whose files Token Circles recognises on its own, in alphabetical order. The list is about file formats. It says nothing about which bank to use.
Where a bank’s own help explains the steps, you’ll find them here, with the page in the sources at the end. Where it doesn’t, you’ll find where to look instead, so no menu name below is a guess.
DKB
DKB’s help names Exportieren in the transaction overview (Umsätze) for exporting a list you have filtered, for example to the last year. Token Circles reads that list as CSV, a file with Umsatzliste in its name, not as the PDF DKB’s help describes. Your Kontoauszüge sit in the Postfach (in the app: Profil, then Postfach), where DKB keeps most documents for up to ten years, but for Token Circles the transaction list is the file you want.
Erste (Croatia)
Erste’s help for George says you open an account to see all its transactions, and you can search them by name, amount or date. It doesn’t describe the export, so look on that list for a way to download it for a date range, and choose CSV. Token Circles reads Erste’s CSV export: the file opens with a line that starts Izvod prometa po računu.
ING (Netherlands)
In Mijn ING, open the account and look for the option to download its transactions. Set a start and an end date and choose CSV. Token Circles reads ING’s CSV with its fields separated by commas or by semicolons.
N26
N26’s help puts the CSV export on the web version. On the Home tab, pick the account or Space, then Downloads. Under Account Activity, enter a start and an end date, choose CSV and select Download. The monthly balance statements are a separate download, and N26 lists them as PDFs.
PBZ (Croatia)
In PBZ’s digital banking, look on the account’s transactions for a way to save them as an Excel file for a date range. Token Circles reads PBZ’s Excel export (.xls or .xlsx).
Revolut
In the Revolut app, open the account and look for its statement. Choose the spreadsheet version rather than the PDF, and set the period to cover the year: Token Circles reads Revolut’s CSV statement.
Sparkasse
Sparkasse’s help points to the Umsätze menu item in Online-Banking, where you narrow your transactions down to a period. Look there for an export and choose CSV-CAMT, the format Token Circles reads. CSV-MT940 works too.
Wise
Wise gives you one statement per currency balance, each covering up to 365 days, so a year and a few days takes two. On the web, open the currency, select the three dots in the top right corner, then Statements and reports, and choose the statement you want in CSV. Wise asks for your password before the download. For several currencies at once, Wise can bundle the statements into a zip file or email them to you: unzip it and import each CSV.
YNAB
YNAB’s help says exporting only works in its web app. Click your plan’s name at the top of the left sidebar and choose Export Plan. YNAB exports your plan and your whole transaction history as two files: CSV, or tab-separated text (TSV) for currencies written with a decimal comma. The download’s name starts with YNAB Export.
Add the transaction history file under Bank Imports, as CSV or TSV. Token Circles knows it by its columns, whatever it’s called, and one file covers every account in the plan: each row goes to the account it names, a transfer between two of your accounts arrives once, and a Starting Balance row fills in the starting balance of each account the import creates, which you can still change. The plan file holds your budget, so leave it out. A CSV in YNAB’s own import layout (Date, Payee, Memo and the amounts) reads too, one account per file.
Any other bank
Token Circles reads any CSV or Excel file with a date, a description and an amount for each transaction. On the Import page, choose File Upload and match the file’s columns to Date, Description and Amount; the other fields are optional. To get the file, look on your account’s list of transactions for an export or download option, and ask for CSV or Excel.
When the files are in
Open Import in Token Circles and add the files under Bank Imports. It recognises each format above. A bank’s file goes into the account you choose for it, and YNAB’s transaction history into the accounts it names. Your first circle, Clear picture, then shows how many of the 12 months are on file.
